All year round PROVINS offers exhibitions illustrating life in Mediaeval Times.
Visitors have many possibilities to discover the town's mediaeval treasures,
from a documentary film to a tour of the town's underground galleries.

THE TITHE BARN : "Provins during the Fairs of Champagne"

This permanent exhibition is housed in the town's magnificent Tithe Barn (Grange aux Dīmes). It is a realistically faithful presentation of the ancient Champagne Fairs that were famous throughout Europe. Here you will find the old exchange system, the denier provinois (Provins' own coinage), the merchants with their different origins and ways of life, the various goods that were imported and traded...During the 12th and 13th century Champagne Fairs this building was used as a covered market, before becoming a tithe barn in the 14th century.

THE PROVINS TOWN AND DISTRICT MUSEUM

This museum in the 12th century Romanesque House (Maison Romane) houses collections linked to local history.

One room was specially converted in order to present the pottery collection. Here are ancient tools used to fashion the clay and pottery from Neolithic times. You can also see some exceptional two-tone floor tiles, used to decorate houses in mediaeval time.

The basement room has been rehabilitated to display the finest pieces of stonework found in Provins. Greco-Roman statues, Merovingian sarcophagi and sculptured sections from vanished religious buildings all tell of the town's glorious history.

Last but by no means least, an attic showroom contains the famous 12th century chasuble of Saint Edme, chalices, gold work and jewellery...The museum also has some interesting collections connected with the history of Provins: Mediaeval and Renaissance sculpture, paintings and drawings of Provins town and a collection of 18th century freemason's regalia.
