A page of history
The construction of La Croix D’or began in 1264 and finished in 1270 on St Louis’ death. A all oak forest had been entirely used for this edification. Since its creation, the activity of La Croix D’or has never changed. That’s why nowadays, this place is known as the oldest hostelry in France and is registered in the Guiness Book.

Extract from the Medieval Encyclopedia by Viollet le Duc A view of La Croix D’or at the beginning of the 20th century

(p. 561)
This engraving number 16 reproduces the façade of one of theses houses in Provins which end the Paris street. They date from the second half of the 13th century. The living room and bedrooms are located on the first floor. On the ground floor there are the stock and the kitchen. Each room get a very high ceiling: the life in this kind of house looks very simple but large.
